Hi There
I install a forum here
http://www.greenn8.org.uk/cgi-bin/forum/Blah.pl/Blah.pl? some years ago, now I need to move it to another hosting package.
Can anyone advise the best way to back it up and move it across? or point me to the information if it exist somewhere.
Many thanks in advance
best

Hi,
You can download all the files, then upload them to the new host, then follow
this guide to CHMOD them to the correct values. :)

Here is some notes for posterity in case someone else needs this info
I followed the advice and all was well apart from one thing - the theme disappeared
Then I realised that I moved the forum from one domain to another not just another host ( it was on greenn8.org.uk and now it is in greenn8.org)
I had to change all the url's in 'Directories and Web Addresses' area in the admin cpanel...
Once, I did that it could see the theme and all sanity was restored
Many thanks for clear and simple instructions

Ooops, yeah, forgot to mention that...
If you cannot access the admin panel, because the image based menu has disappeared because the paths are wrong, you'll need to download Settings.pl and change the values in there manually. :)

Yes this did take place... since I had the forum in 2 places I just copied and pasted the link to the 'Directories and Web Addresses' page (with the right domain in front of it )
and once I changed the domain in all the field I got a dialogue box prompting me to attach the theme...
The rest is history ...
Necessity is the mother of invention and all that jazzzzzz applies here I guess
all done now...

Hello,
there is probably a quicker way of doing this, but I've discovered that being next-to-illiterate as far as computers is concerned, the best way for me is the long way.
I would close the forum for maintenance, and then copy the cgi-bin directory and the blahdocs directory in the appropriate formats (one is ascii transfer, the other binary) to my own computer, and I would check the chmod particulars of all the files beforehand, as the installation guide only gives the chmods for a clean installation.
Then I would upload the directories to the new server (right transfer formats, again), and check the chmodding was as it should be (it won't be, I can assure you of that!).
When the url points to the new server, I would reopen for business.

hi
that is exactly what I did, however I did not bother closing the forum as I did in the middle of the night when every one was fast a sleep or so I think...
