How about having a Chat Room Built into the board where, members can go to and chat all the time.

Anyone want to do this one?  :P  I've never been keen on a chat room built in, myself, but some like it.  Some people have done it I believe ... someone is bound to help you.  :)

I use gtchat, and have if anyone is in the chat room showing on my forum,
http://www.theblacksea.co.uk/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?

This does the job OK here :)

I think what he meant is a chat box right inside the forums like these forums that I know has it:

http://www.ffx2.com/index.php
http://forums.ffgon.com/

And the thing is that they're all build in vBulletin forums soft.

I really like one to in Eblah.

I think this would be a big job if a person could do it, to enable the chat script to share the same users etc.. but who knows...

It'd be nice, but I just hate the idea, personally.  I know of another forum that also has chat service, but you have to pay extra for it.  So I have no clue how it works or anything (I believe it uses IRC).  I think chat rooms and forums just aren't meant to be one.  But, I could be wrong.  :P

I think a chatroom would be EXCELLENT.
And it wouldn't be difficult; this is all you need to do.

Look for a script for 'entropy chat' it's simple html that is inserted into the page, makes a gateway.  -All you need to do, is find a way to make it customizable.  I don't need php or anything fancy, just simple display settings.

Justin- dying to know what you think of the entropy chat proposal.  I have an entropy chat room set up on my site but the code is not customizable; I can not add background colour or pictures, change anything like that.   If you had the skill to make this happen (I assume it wouldn't be difficult) then the addition of a chatroom would be super-easy.

If someone else will do it, then great.  But I haven't the time to do it.  :-/

I Personaly Hate The Idea, That's Why I Use E-Blah And A Few Other Forums  :(
Posted by: eonapocalypse, August 4, 2004, 6:00am; Reply: 10
The main reason why I want a chatroom is because my site is made and maintained by a collaboration of people- not everybody has messenger systems, and those that do are all using different ones.   When I see another user is online, it would be very useful if I could pm them to meet me in the entropy chat room (that's built into E-Blah).

I wouldn't need (or want) chatroom registration or font change, passwords or different rooms; just one generic room for simple chat (I just need the style to fit the rest of the site).

Eonapocalypse, I recall seeing some simple shoutboxes that refreshed as soon as someone posted something... I forgot where I saw them, but I'll keep an eye out for that.
These could be placed at one edge of the page, and the background and everything are (usually) not too hard to customize.
Personally, I wouldn't know how to add them to E-Blah's perl cgi pages, but I might be able to whip something up...
If I still remember that I posted this, I'll drop a line as soon as I find and fix that stuff.

I myself set up a para chat room on my website and have a lnk to it on the board.
We can jump into it anytime and chat or discuss admin stuff right there.

It would be cool to have a built in chat/shout as many have allready said, built right into the board and sharing the login.

I've used GTChat for years and installed it for others in their forums. I don't run a chat myself at present but that's what I'd choose if I did. There is no better free Perl/cgi chat. Sadly the latest version hit some snags and the old version is the only one available for the moment - but that has now been running for several years, which says a great deal about it.

It's simple to insert the chat status into any html page, with or without SSI, but if you want to use SSI you can do that and extend it with another script that refreshes the status page every few minutes or, I suppose, every few seconds if you want.

The only thing it cannot do is use the same login information that the forum does, but anyone who winges at having to create a new login just once is really being silly.

GTChat is very easy to customize on the HTML side, though the scripts are encrypted, you don't want to go there. Within those limits you can do a lot to make it your own. I set up this one a few weeks back when I was doing the guy's forums, and it's entirely customized to suit him. Personally I'm against applications becoming hopelessly top-heavy; I've used PHP-Nuke and would have preferred that some of the built-in stuff wasn't there to start with. The more code you have, the more chance that a hacker can do more widespread damage, the more chances for conflicts and bugs and so on. And if you do have to pull it to bits, there's more chance of not being able to put it all back together again or finding you've got bits left over! I'd rather see Eblah stay focussed on doing one job really well.

neofile, I am with you 100% on this, and I have had GTChat running for about 5/6 years, and it is still full of features... On my own little forum, it shows if there is anyone in the chat room etc, with a link over to the chat page
http://www.theblacksea.co.uk/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl? The CTChat version running does have a few mods on it, and I have never had any problems with the script.

I'm glad this came up, I've been trying for over a year now to get some help with my irc chat to display the users in the chat room on my eblah main forum page.  Maybe someone can help me with this now???  I've tried gtchat in the past but its rather slow IMO, the irc seems to be the only way to go as far as chat rooms go.
I'm kinda familiar with /msg chanserv and /msg nickserv stuff but much beyond that is where I get lost.  I'd be more then willing to help with what I know if that will help things here at eblah......

Maybe a little late for this, but, I know the chatroom would be good aswell.  I have all my admins and members asking for one and I am suppose to be getting one up now.

Now the other thing is, Justin doesn't need to add it to the already perl scripts, I mean if anyone knows a good chatroom, why can he maybe distribute the free chatroom with it, so that you can choose, all he has to do is put a link on the page if he wants, if not leave instructions on how to, considering it's so easy to do in the first place, because I have done it once.

So no need to build it right in, but maybe have a good roo distributed with E-Blah.  and if he wants, customized with E-Blah colours and banners.

If you found one that used some sort of username variable, just use like chat.php?user=<blah v="$username"> in the template.  This might help.  :P

I can take a look if you want Justin... I maybe busy, but I can keep my eyes open for it.

I'd love this feature as well.  I have no idea how I would be able to use the same database from the boards to be used for the chat program.  That way the members have no need to re-register to use the chat.

Check this post from the blah hackz site.  It has a link to one that is 100% integrated.

yes I saw that and then I went to the site. That site is set up for alumni ONLY you need to be a member to read and I think I was refused. So that's not a good example.....lol

How you doing Craig?

I found a tag box that is pretty cool. It is free but has pop ups (unless you got a blocker) and all you do is stick it into your main css html and vwa-la!!

http://www.hvfi.com/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl

if you want to see it in action. I myself am looking for a better one now though. Tag Box is customizable for a $20 fee.

:-/

Also I found a cool chat html

Jabber chat.
Lotsa customizable stuff, emote actions. it is awesome!

(good thing I double checked thid link...oopsy

From what I see, JabberChat is a direct hack from BlueChat.

Take a look: http://www.bluesparks.com/cgi-bin/bluechat/bluechat.cgi

Yep, it's been dressed up a little, but it is bluechat. While Bluechat is free, I'd discourage using a product that someone has hacked up and called their own without giving credit to the actual author.

Well I hate to promote hacks but we can't say these things for certain. I myself am happy with Jabber chat, it works and it was free. Blue chat is prolly cool as hell too,(could it be they hacked jabber...we will never know and I don't care)
but really I am just interested in finding a better Shout/Tag box. The one I have works but is lame-O. Seen anything cooler?

Thanks!
