Hi, can anyone tell me where to enter the meta description for the main forum index page in 10.3.5.

In Google my index page in search results is showing the board description for my bottom board as the description for the forum. This is is a minority board for younger people that is not who my main forum is aimed at and this is not what I want to show in search engines.

How can and where can I enter a custom meta description for the forum index page?

I've looked there and it is in this format:

<title><blah v="$title"> - <blah v="$mbname"></title>

I understand static html pages and can edit them but his looks a bit of php to me, which is totally double dutch to me and every time I touch it things go belly up

I'm happy with the actual title but wanted to add a sentence of description like I would in a static html page in the meta description area.

Misunderstood then, meta description can go anywhere between  <head> & </head>

Under <title>

<meta name="description" content="Your description text" />

Just add <meta content="describe forum here" name="description" />

into the <head> of template.html.

i wouldn't advise that though. because that same template file is used for every single thread also, making the description for each thread the same....

also google doesn't pay much attention to those any more, only if the site is heavily flash based so its blind to the content.

You can go to webmaster tools in google, delete it from the google cache (takes a few days) then it will re crawl that and get a new description after its been deleted.

If there was some way of making the meta description only exist if the template was being used to show the forum root that would be better but i don't think there is, plus with google now finding its own meta descriptions it serves not much use..

for instance. search something in google, then go to a result and view the page source, it's not likely the text shown under the title on the search result would be the meta description tag contents. it would be a section of code from under a <h1,2,3,4,5 or 6> tag most likly...

Just to clarify my massive post above. The chances google will actually use that meta description in its search results is VERY slim... I'd recommend the delete from googles cache and pray it gets a better snippet for it's description when it re crawls idea...

Oh, I've already done it (I kept a backup), although I was more concerned with what description people see when the site shows up in an organic search as currently it sounds as though it is for kids. I'm not concerned with indexing and ranking as that is happening ok. So I wanted to give a better promotional description to my targets.

Have I just co**d it up then?

lol no. it won't do any harm, just won't do any good in my opinion.

The meta tag description USED to control what is shown in the blue rectangle i drew on the screenshot below. Not any more though, people used that meta description to pull in visitors but didn't give them the content they was expecting. So that's why google now just uses it's "initiative"... Not likely to have any effect on what google shows there...
