Dear Support Team,

Is there any way that I can completely and effectively block junk postings? I am having a problem with some people posting commercial/pornographic messages on my messageboard, and it is now starting to get on my nerves, as I am having to go in daily and delete the junk.

Your advice or the advice of other users would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

ADR1

Enable Akismet
Enable validation
Disable Guest posting
Enable Human Verification if your host server supports it
Download and install the assira mod from here: http://www.eblah.com/forum/m-1211527480/

Just a few ideas,

Also, ban any email, username and ip from these posts before deleting the post

Good points martin, But what exactly does the "assira" mod do? I've read its description and installed it but nothing seems to have changed?

Thanks!

Did you enable it in the Admin Center - Main Preferences?
It is Human Verification for anyone who's host doesn't support it.

Ah yeah I found the setting now... Didn't work though... I do have MD5
GD installed as far as i know though... I'm using MD5 Encrypted passwords and i guess the GD must be installed because that's the Session log-in module isn't it?

EDIT: I also just noticed that even thought the test install worked fine with that mod, when i installed it it made my "register.pl" not work... i had to reupload the original.

Dear Martin/Support Team,

Thanks for your advice on 31st May. I have banned several IP addresses, and the amount of junk mail seems to have decreased. However there is one persistent offender who somehow manages to keep coming back with the same username even though I have banned her/him. Why is this happening?

Also:

1. In your email of 31st May, you advised downloading Assira/enabling Akismet. I have downloaded Assira, but how do I install it? And do I install it specifically to the forum or to the site that it is a part of?

2. How do I enable Akismet?

Thanks,

David

The arissa mod is only good for stopping spam bots, these are scripts that crawl the net for sites like yours without such security. They then use the usual inputs to post spam.

But akismet will stop human users too! Go to wordpress's site to get your akismet key, you can then simply paste it into the very bottom setting of settings in admin panel.

That should stop most or all spam. If it doesn't make sure your banning their I.P address... That way they can only return if they use a proxy server. They'll eventually run out of proxies to use though..

In your situation I'd suggest the akismet first, it's stopped sooo much spam for me!
