is there a feature or hack that will enable me to require someone to post in a thread (for example a members welcome thread) before they will be granted access to the rest of the site?

Just create a post count group, and then make all the boards be visible ONLY to those who have post counts over 1 post.

I do installs for $25 and upgrades for $20.

or create a simple query.  Something like
Code
SELECT Count(*)
FROM Posts
   INNER JOIN Threads ON Posts.ThreadID = Threads.ThreadID
      INNER JOIN Members ON Posts.MemberID = Members.MemberID
WHERE
   Members.UserName = 'user'
   AND Threads.CategoryName = 'Category'

Return it to a variable, if the variable is less than or equal to 0 then you know they didn't post in that category/thread.  These may not be the proper names of the fields/tables, this is just an example to illustrate a point.

Again, this is why E-Blah SQL is going to be better than the flat-file.  It'll make generating reports, running statistics, and creating add-ons/mods much easier.

It's just that not many people are wanting a Perl forum with a SQL backend.

Darn those people.  The real issue that many people don't want a Perl forum in general.  Many just want PHP because it's "easier" and newer.  Though E-Blah's flat file is amazing.  I just think if you really want a fully-functional large-scale forum it's going to need to be database driven to allow quick customizations and tweaking.

It would help.. just code it up.  Either before each new posts, validate the user by checking for his/her name in the specified thread.  OR place the information in a cookie and validate the user against the cookie information.  otherwise the code i provided should help.

to answer your question, no, i don't think there is anything installed like that at this time.  there is no mandatory posting section in order to use the rest of the site.
