Hi,
I've just had the latest version installed by Justin, it looks good and seems a bit faster!
Only problem is I can't find the new tag facility for threads any one point me in the right direction?

Go to Admin/Settings and enable it.  Then edit threads (the first post only) or post new threads and add tags.

I do installs for $25 and upgrades for $20.

Doh!
There it was right near the top.
I had trawled right through all the settings line by line and missed this
Thanks Justin.

It's okay, I'm sure others will have the same question.

Is it possible to make an auto-tag feature in the future? My forum has over 3000 posts and it would take me forever to tag them all. lol

But what words would be tagged?  That's the reason there isn't one.

Well, I was thinking about having the auto-tagger find keywords inside of the first post of each thread. Keywords would be those that are repeated a few times in the post. I'm not sure if that's possible, but you may consider it.

I have thought about it, but there are a lot of common words it could pick up on.

I'd like to suggest that the concept of simple auto-tagging is a dead-end.

Tags, or keywords, are dependent of the context of the post/thread/message, and the same word can have no significant meaning in one, but be central to the concept of another. Creating tags on the basis of eg repetition or frequency would end with a huge cloud of inappropriately tagged posts. You'd ultimately end up needing some sort of global tag editor or manager to clear out the dross, or be creating white/black lists of words to select/ignore.

For example, we deal with recent history, and World War II or World War Two, and even WWII, is frequently referred to in posts, Potentially, the words World, War, II and Two could be auto-tagged, but in our context, we'd only be interested in having the combination World War II used as a tag.

I'm not proposing it, just thinking out loud, but maybe the solution would be something like an Admin controlled white list (like the list of Censor Word) which would allow Admins to define words, or word groups,  that should be listed as tags if they appear in a message in their forum, that way, words would only be used as tags if deemed relevant to the context of the forum concerned.

Apollo, that's exactly why tagging like that just wouldn't work without some sort of AI.

That tagging idea is actually a really good idea.  I'll add it to my list.

Autotagging will be included in the next release.

For autotagging, there is a stop word list that is needed.  I took the stopword list found in MySQL.  New installations will have this list pre-installed.  Those that are upgrading will need to do the following to install the word list:

Create a new file in /Prefs called "stopwords.txt".  Make certain you upload this file in ASCII!  This file should have the following words (give or take -- they can be modified any way you want them):

Thanks for the list do they go in just like that in notepad or comma separated.

What I think would be even more useful is a pick list of existing tags as my members are very poor at tagging and I do virtually all of it but being consistent is difficult so having a pick list of existing ones would make it very useful.

Also most useful keywords are now phrases and getting that done automatically is probably nigh on impossible as the software would have a problem knowing which words belong together.

I dont understand the stop words. Are these words going to be excluded from being tags or are they the tag words that the script is looking for?

I uploaded the list of words, but still get tag words of like 'the' and other random meaningless stuff.

I really dont think the auto tagging feature should be switched on at all without making the admin running the forum aware how to strip out meaningless words. It really makes tagging a detriment rather than a feature
