Ok im relativley new to this so please cut me some slack. I am using free hosting on go daddy and i am trying to upload files for the forum. Is it normal for me to have to upload each individual file from each folder? i dont even know how i even check if im uploading it in ascii or binary becasue i dont even know what that means...and the best way to do things is to just do it, but I've already come to my first hurdle. Do i have to create all of those folders that are contained in the eblah folder or can i just upload the entire folder called "forum". i would rather check here than to spend hours doing it and realise that ive just done everything wrong.
Have i completely got the wrong end of the stick by doing this entirely wrong? |

Nooooo, jesus, that would take a long time. i'm guessing you mean using the upload feature on the godaddy site?
use an ftp client like smart ftp. That will determine ascii or binary for you too, so you don't have to worry about that, does CHMOD too.
If you need help setting up smart ftp visit my site. VVV (the support guys here just support eblah not 3ed party programs.)
Hope that helps! |

Yup, you really need a third party FTP client, indeed as you build up any web site a FTP client is at the heart. |

ok thank you for response but im afraid smart ftp will just not log in to the server. all of the info is correct and ive put in the password and login name and redone it 10 to 15 times over just to make totally sure that i have put in the correct details. ive even tried putting the http:// address instead of the ftp:// and it still keeps coming up with the same. it will just keep telling me that it cannot log in. - i sat there and it tried logging in about 20 times and ive tried it for at least 5 login attempts after retyping in the details... yes ive been there hours. |

hehe, yeah that can be confusing, the ftp:// bit is to tell a browser what protocol to use, but since this is an ftp program it already knows that so its just ftp.yourdomain or ip, instead of www. |
