there's this default moderator group but seems like the options available for editting are pretty much lesser. so wat doesn't a moderator in the group empowered to do?

also, i don't quite understand how the member group level works. any1 care to shed some light? thank you~!

Member Group Level:
The member groups which a member is part of that has the lowest level will be shown on their profile (it is recommended that you keep this between 1 and 10). To disable this group from showing at all, change this to 0.

The Mderator group is a group that you don't add people too.  Instead, through your Boards and Category setup area, you can specify a person to be a mod on a specific board.  When you do that, it gives them special rights on that board only.  Basically you are saying that they are the watch dog for only that area of your forum.  They can do stuff like: Moderate Threads (Delete, move, lock, split, and merge threads), Make Thread Sticky, Modify Posts.

Member groups work differently.
1.  People can apply to be part of the group unless you say the group is not open.  Then you have to add them.
2.  These groups can be given a wide range of rights on your forum.  From a normal user to an admin.
3.  Member groups can be made invisible in the member list by checking the Hide this Group? check box.
4.  Setting the group level to 0 makes it so you won't see it on your forum at all.

Here is an example of how the group level works:
You have Group A and Group B.
Group A has a level of 1, and Group B has a level of 2.
You are a member of both groups.
When you post, it will show you as a member of Group A, not Group B.

Hope that helps,
Craig.

hmm this is kinda confusing. let's say i add a new member group named "Global moderator" and assign a member under this group. so eventually @ boards and categories i added him to be a mod for a particular section of the forum. so his identity will be the default "moderator or "global moderator"?

also, let's say i'm a member of 3 different groups and this 3 groups all have a group level of 1. if i were to post a reply, which group would i belong to? all A B and C?

On the first part, it doesn't work like that because of the default memeber groups which every member is also a part of.  If you make a special group (calling it what ever you want), and give that group special permissions on your forum, they will be able to perform those special permissions on any board that they have access to as a default memeber...hope that make sense.

On part two, you belong to all of them, but the one that you will show up as is the one that you were added to last, or maybe even the one that is shown highest in the list in your admin center...more then likely  I'm not sure why you would have member groups with the same number though .
