Just had a request from one of my members and wondered how plausible it was?

Quoted Text
could the smiles be split into sections ie emotions, food, transport, animals etc maybe even have a section for new simley's??

Just thought it might make it easier to find the smiley your looking for.

The smilies have taken on a life of their own, and my members are VERY fond of them, but they are getting out of control and need sorting....... anyway .... any ideas?

Yes you can do this but you will need to sort them into the correct categories.
Once sorted use the prog listed here to create the smp file.

but could you categorise them in the 'add smilies' window so each category had a title or would they still all just be spat into the one window? or could it even be spilt into multiple pages with a back and next link so there's not so many to load at one time?

You might want to poll the users on your forum to see if this is something that they want.  I don't know anyone that would want to first click on the add more smiles link, and then another link to get to even more smiles.  In fact, I would venture a guess that on most forums, no one even notices the add more smiles button at all.  My point to this is that sometimes to much organization is more of a pain to your users than you might think.

What is wrong with all the exra smiles showing on one page?

-Craig.

Not really.  There are a lot of people in the states still that are on dial up.

I see your point with the load time, but you do realize that regardless of if they are on seperate pages or not, the images still take the same time to load

aaah but if the smilie you wanted was on the first page, you'd only have to load one page worth of smilies...... of course you'd still be stuffed if it was on the last 'page', but you could skip through and not load everything in between, OR you could have a category index and just load the page you wanted......
