I have just been reading through the new install doc before I attempt to upload all the files.  I've noticed that it says:

"The blahdocs directory (including sub-directories and files) MUST be uploaded in Binary mode to your web server's root directory. Your root directory is your web sites home directory. It is sometimes (but not always) named htdocs, or public_html."

I have a root directory, and in that root directory it has a public_html folder - I know I may be stating the obv but don't want to do it wrong (as I have to upload each file and folder seperately which takes ages!! ), am I right to upload the 'forum' folder (and contents) to my cgi-bin directory (located in root directory) and then the 'blahdocs' folder into the public_html directory (located in root directory)?

You are right in your assumption. What are you using to upload your files? Try SmartFTP. It is free.

Thank you!  Have downloaded SmartFTP and it's made things so much easier!

My problem is now that I have set it all up, chosen a password for Administrator, tried to login and it says that my password is incorrect, I'm sure it's not as I've literally just done it!!  Have had the link emailed to reset but I keep being told that the page doesn't exist!

Is there a way around this or should I just cut my losses and start from scratch?

Oh, am thinking that I'll just remove all the files and start again - didn't really take that onlg anyway!  Hope it works or I may have to resort to crying and stamping my feet, doesn't usually help but makes me feel a little better!

Make sure that you chmod everything correctly.  If you don't, it could cause problems.
