It is very hard to start from scratch if you are a beginner. I have created several themes from this theme and have also learned a lot about the code that goes into a theme. Even if your idea seems whack, stick with it and make it happen. You could probably make one similar to his though. Just match the colors you see to the X template. Even if your idea seems whack, stick with it and make it happen.
