E-Blah SQL and E-Blah 10 will be two different products.

E-Blah 10 Series
I will still keep things running and the support will still be available here.  I'll release bug fixes from time to time, and I will still continue new installs and upgrades for E-Blah 10 and any version above it.

E-Blah SQL
E-Blah SQL (for lack of a better name right now), will be the next version, previously E-Blah 11.0.  The feature sets between 10 and SQL will not be the same, and the SQL version will be a completely different script and work differently from the 10 series.  There will be a conversion script that will allow you to convert from 10.2 to the SQL version (versions higher than 10.2 may not be fully supported).

This forum will be converted to the SQL version soon, and beta testing for it should begin soon.  A stable release will probably not be available for a some time.

I've thought about it all I could, and there's no way I can fully let the flat file version of E-Blah end, but there's no way I can fully maintain it as I have in the past with the new version either.  I understand some users will not be thrilled with the change, but the change is being done to increase scalability with E-Blah, along with increasing overall speed and reliability of the software.  The majority of the new version still uses the 10.2 code; however, some features have been stripped or vastly changed, and the entire database-backend has been rewritten.

Have any questions?  Feel free to post.

I do installs for $25 and upgrades for $20.

You have said that the E-Blah SQL version will run on SQL Lite and SQL.  How easy is it to run SQL Lite on a server that doesn't include SQL?  Is it something that a user could do on their own, or would their host have to agree to it / install it?

I ask this only because I know how impossible it will be to support the flat file version once the SQL version takes off (and it will...that I am sure of).

Of course this could be a plus.  With next to no new releases on the flat file side, the mods would be endless  I can also think of some very cool mods for the SQL version.

I support you 100% Justin!  Which ever way you go, I will continue to use E-Blah.

-Craig.

Thanks Craig ... been feeling a little down about the whole thing today.

Turbo -- you will be able to convert from the nightly.  Any E-Blah 10 forum should convert, but I can't say for sure.  There's a converter around already, but it's not near completion yet.  It works decently though.  If it were not to work for some reason, you can always do the an upgrade to the latest nightlies.

SQLite should be installed with DBI.  If it's not, it should be able to be installed inside of your root directory (where Blah.pl is located).  If it's a problem, I'll try to get little tutorial for everyone to read that explains how to move everything over.  That said though, SQLite is a bit slower as it has to load an entire database each load.  It'll be much more fast if users can use MySQL or another database server.  If SQLite is just too slow, I may not be able to use it.  But the plan is to use it.  Also, I presume it will still suffer the issue of space (where it'll zero out if there is none on the server) -- only if it happens the entire database will be wiped out.

Tutorial sounds grand, as i dont really understand the SQLlite stuff - Probably easiest for me to put it in the directory with eblah - did that to get stats graph to work so know that method works!!

Hopefully want to get a SQL Blah version running so i can practice setting it up rather than ruining my proper forum! hope its not too slow as i cant afford to upgrade and get SQL databases yet

Do you have a MySql version of Eblah? I don't have SQL Lite installed on my server.

I absolutely do not think you should end development on the flatfile version.  Either keep developing both or do not develop the sql version.

The flatfile thing is why about 90% of users come to eblah.  They don't have any sort of database capability.  I'll continue to use the flatfile version (even though I have access to SQL).

I'd definitely say do not do it.

I found EBlah through Heart Internet, they install it on the sites that dont have SQL databases, might loose potential members if there was no longer a flatfile version?

Here's what's to happen.  I may scrap the SQL version, simply because it's going to take a lot of time to complete and for lack of support from the community.  Another reason is simply because I don't have enough knowledge of databases.  I've been working with MySQL 5 -- many people are still using 4.  I'm using some of the latest Perl DBI modules -- others are using older versions (such as Craig).  Sure, you can check to see if everything is good to go for people during the install, but then you have 90% of users who can't even use E-Blah.  You can even upgrade the Perl modules.  While I think the SQL version is a lot better, I'm not sure if it'll be beneficial to E-Blah in the long run.

Here's what I've got done though:

http://www.eblah.com/eblahsql/Blah.pl

Almost everything works, but it's not without bug testing, which are bound to be many.  I wrote an installer, which runs to an extent.  It's attached, it's still a ton of work to get the stuff actually running.

If I do decide to finish it, the Calendar will probably be the largest part to be completely removed.

So there we go ... and I hope this makes everyone happy again.

Hmmm...I don't know if I'm happy or not.  I was kinda jazzed about the SQL version...until I tried to install it  Oh well, I guess if you are happy, then I am happy
