Have you at any point of time thought of creating this feature??

Rating the posts would be a good feature. Just shows you how good your post is amidst 100's of posts

If you plan to have this feature in future releases, it would be nice to have some thing like the wordpress plugin wp-postratings.

demo can be seen here

Enable it in Admin/Settings or per-board in Admin/Boards and Categories.  It's been there for years.

I do installs for $25 and upgrades for $20.

Are you talking about thread voting or individual posts voting in a thread?

I was pointing towards voting/rating of individual posts in a thread. Sorry for the confusion.

It doesn't rate individual posts inside a thread, but the actual thread.  I'm not sure how voting on a post inside a thread would benifit anyone because you have to read the entire thread most of the time to get anything out of it.  If you just read one post, you will be missing all the other information inside the thread .

HI Craig thanks for your views.

If its a discussion thread some persons views may be strongly liked by many compared to the other. The only way to let him know is either you reply in thread or vote his post. Voting is the best way to support a person. Also there might be many guest users who don't like posting but can definitely vote a post and support user if they like his words and views. It need not be a default plugin.

I see what you are saying, but guests shouldn't be allowed to rate anyway because there is no way to track them.  This means a user could log out, go to the thread, and vote for their post over and over again

I think if a voting is IP based, it will let you vote only once.  if you are a guest or logged in user doesn't matter.

Example.

http://www.lesterchan.net/wordpress/

vote for this post in this blog, you will not be allowed to vote again.

You can't make voting (or user identification) IP based, because most users have random IPs assigned to them by their ISP when they connect, and in other cases, IPs are shared behind a common network connection.

Blogs and forums are different animals, and I agree that in my blogs, I want my individual posts rated as you describe for Wordpress (good choice ).

This is different from a forum where the thread and its posts are equivalent to the blog's initial post and following comments.

This means that rating a forum's thread is actually the equivalent of rating a blog's (initial) post.

I think that's the same as Craig's thoughts, but in different words

Hi Apollo,

I got your point. I was just pointing wordpress because it looks sleek and nice way of voting, but not to be confused with the thread voting to post voting thing.

I think the wordpress plugin uses ip based voting. If you check the admin panel you can see a log of ip's voted.

Well, Votes in most forum software or random website polls that you see often on news websites can be either IP based, cookie based or both IP and cookie based. Depends on how accurate you want to implement the feature.

Some forums like discusware adapts post rating too. Eg.

http://support.discusware.com/forum/messages/5/5.html?951859565

But if you want to vote, it takes you to a different page where u vote the post, instead it would be nice if we adapt the wordpress way of voting for individual posts or the way that it is used in eblah forum for message- easy edit option. So that it doesn't take you to new page every time a person wants to vote.
