I would like to run my own web server from home. I port forwarded port 80 and 21 for my web server and ftp server, but people still can't see my site. I've also checked portforward.com but that wasn't all what I needed.  I am trying to host an Eblah forum on my server for my organization, IGA. I had my server online for a day, but then it went invisible from the internet, and since then, I couldn't get it to come back up. Do I need to change my DMZ or make my IP static? Any further ideas? I have a WRT54G Linksys router if that helps. Thanks.

Even if your idea seems whack, stick with it and make it happen.

Your ISP probably blocked port 80.

I do installs for $25 and upgrades for $20.

you either need a static ip or use a dynamic dns server.  if your isp has blocked port 80, you can use another port, then goto your dns settings at your registrar and forward your domain to the new ip with the port number specified.

Some ISP's will keep blocking ports that have servers on them.

very true Justin.  first thing to do i would say is verify with isp if they block ports or not, then go from there.  many do, but many don't.

I have a free dns server with DynDns and it works great. Would I be able to change the port of which my site is located for dyndns.com?

that i am afraid i do not know.  dynamic dns is something i have not had much experience with as i have always used static ip's.  however, i would imagine it's pretty similar in setup.  you would need to setup domain forwarding and then forward to your ip address with the specified port.  you cannot specify a port number in a names.  say your ip address is 111.111.111.111 and you are using port 8080, you would activate your domain forwarding and set forward port to 111.111.111.111:8080

again, i am assuming the steps are similar for dyndns, but that is just a guess.

depending on which http server you are using, it should be simple to setup a different port for your server.

Hey,

Another thing to keep in mind is, if you have Windows XP Service Pack 2, it has a firewall-- try to disable it and see if people can access your site then.

To disable it, Go to "Control Panel" and you should see "Windows firewall" or something.

Sometimes my server gets the port backwards..  It tries to use port 08. When that happens I turn it upside down so its using 80 again.

Firewall is probably the problem. That happened to me. Make sure that Windows firewall isn't running, that you didn't install another firewall, and that you don't have a router prohibiting ingoing connections.

Thanks guys. I appreciate all of your help. It was a port forwarding problem. My server is now online at this address http://igahome.dyndns.org/ and my eblah forum http://igahome.dyndns.org/forum
