I was recently hospitalized with a serious heart condition and it scared me enough to try to start a support forum for heart disease.

http://www.heartbeatforum.net/forum/

It's all ready to go, but one thing.. how do you get a forum off the ground?  I think it's a valid topic for a forum.  Should I rely on google to get people there?  A forum is only as good as the convesation going on there, and if there aren't members and conversation, I can't see how it will be successful.  I'm pretty sure I'll be indexed by google soon, but theres not much to index.  I've got the meta data in the template and have also setup the sitemap (with Sitemap.pl) and submitted to google... I also am using Justins's newer robots.txt suggestion.  so I guess I'll just have to see what happens..  any tips??

I wish I could help in advertising.  All I know is to post around on forums that are wanting people to post about certain topics.  I want to advertise certain things of mine, but I'm not sure.  Don't spam people though ... maybe someone else has a good idea.  Advertising with Google may help you?  Not sure, never tried it (costs money ).

Nice forum, btw.

You can submit your site to the search engines. If you go to my site: http://www.pcfixzone.co.uk  and choose Web Submission from the PC Help dropdown menu, you will find a few freebie website submission tools.

You don't get listed in all of them but it's a good head start.

On my boards there are quite a few...umm...err...well age appropriate individuals.  Of course I do know that heart disease isn't always age dependent.  Anyway, I'll post a thread with a link to your new forum on my board and see if it helps.

-forum is using the mod_rewrite feature
-E-Blah is creating an RSS feed for suscribers (http://www.heartbeatforum.net/forum/v-shownews/a-headlines/ )
-most recent post is shown on main page of site ( http://www.heartbeatforum.net ) using server side include.
-E-Blah sitemap generation using Sitemap.pl in /forum directory ( http://www.heartbeatforum.net/sitemap.xml )
-ads shown in message display using google adsense etc etc

cool stuff.

Use the one in the template directory (the news.xml file I believe it is).  It doesn't call E-Blah each time.

altough it seems, that with http://www.heartbeatforum.net/blahdocs/template/Shownews.xml

it only shows the last post made, instead of the designated number of posts in admin. the show news length works though.

You have to post a new thread (or replying may do it?).  It doesn't always update.

On the advertising front, join every relevant forum, mailing list, Yahoo Group etc you can find, make useful contributions and put your forum address in your sig. Find websites on topic and ask for a link swap. Link to every related site you can, then the title of their site will be shown on yours and people searching for them might just drop in to your site too.

If you're expecting older visitors you might want to change the style sheets to display larger text as default.

Put an explanatory post on each empty board so it doesn't say 'Not Available', which might put newbies off.

Maybe give your members a completely off topic board so they can ramble on about other things?

Good luck.

Font size!  Dang I forgot about that one.  If you want I can send you all the stuff you need to put a Theme switcher in AND already have the fonts ready to go.  If you look at my forum it is at the top.  I like the smaller fonts as it keeps thing neat and tidy but alot of my members don't like looken through the lines of their glasses (lol) so I added three different sizes.  Doesn't change ANYTHING other than the font size.

Came up with a pretty easy solution for the dynamic text resizing....  It uses javascript..

Place this in the <head> of your template
Code

<script type="text/javascript">
var tags = new Array( 'div','td','tr','p','b','table','strong','emphasis','a','h1','h2','h3','pre','sub','sup','i','th','cp','ul','ol','li','dt','dd');
var pixelArray =  new Array('10','12','16','20','24','30','40');
var emArray =  new Array('0.7','0.9','1.0','1.5','2.0','2.5','3');
var initSize = 1;

function fontSizer(inc,unit) {
if (!document.getElementById)
return;
var size = initSize;
size += inc;
if (size < 0 ) {
size = 0;
}
if (size > 6 ) {
size = 6;
}
initSize = size;
getBody = document.getElementsByTagName('body')[0];
for (i = 0 ; i < tags.length ; i++ ) {
getallTags = getBody.getElementsByTagName(tags[i]);
for (k = 0 ; k < getallTags.length ; k++)
getallTags[k].style.fontSize = (unit=='px') ? pixelArray[size]+unit: emArray[size]+unit;
}
}

</script>

Then,

Wherever you would like to have the links to change the font size, place these hyperlinks in your template:

Code

<a href="#" onMouseDown="fontSizer(1,'px')">Increase Font Size</a>

and

Code

<a href="#"  onMouseDown="fontSizer(-1,'px')">Decrease Font Size</a>

If there are certain areas that you do not want to have resized, just take their style out of the arrays....I think...

Code
var tags = new Array( 'div','td','tr','p','b','table','strong','emphasis','a','h1','h2','h3','pre','sub','sup','i','th','cp','ul','ol','li','dt','dd');
