I've been busy writting two converters for E-Blah.  One is for converting YaBB to E-Blah. The other converter is for converting phpBB to E-Blah.  If you are interested, please download them here:

Both converters convert PMs, Boards, Categories, Messages, and Members to the E-Blah format.  Some forum specific settings are not converted, but these shouldn't be too big of an issues for most people.

Seems that YaBB have found your converters - and apparently now are going to pirate your work.  Pretty sad eh ?

That's Cory from YaBB if anyone's wondering .....

I know where's he's trying to go with it too.  The only thing YaBB has on E-Blah is that I used YaBB and learned a lot about it before I started my own forum.  An early alpha of E-Blah can be found there.  This was the alpha that had the very earliest backend, which by now has been rewritten at least twice that I know of, among other things.  I'm not going to defend anything anymore, I feel if the public wants the truth about E-Blah and the code, they can compare and contrast the two.  I'd be happy to discuss it with you in private and work out any issues you or your "team" has, but this is not the place.

Well don't delete his account - I've seen them do that.

Anyway Cory - based upon the text in your message, it seems you want to take the converters Justin wrote, and use that code to make a E-Blah -> YaBB converter, and a phpBB -> YaBB converter.

If this is not so, then do take the time to clarify what you meant.

My post on http://www.yabbforum.com had nothing to do with phpBB, except that I thought we might be able to side step looking for the phpBB data structure when it is available in this converter.

The point of my post was to say that we can use the data schema in that converter for Eblah to create our own Eblah -> YaBB 2 converter.  I don't see anything wrong with that.  We are not "pirating" Justin's work, as we are writing our own converter system and code.  The database format available in your converter is freely available not only in the converter, but in Eblah itself.  Did I complain when Justin took YaBB's data format and put it in his converter?  No.  We are all free to do that, as it's healthy and smart competition.

We have been friendly with each other thus far, aside from one of our members making some silly posts here, and you guys making several silly/unfounded attacks against YaBB on this forum (more so in the past than present).  Let's not start an attack here.  That is not my intention, and I hope it wasn't Ryan's, because I agree that this isn't the place nor is it even necessary.

Ryan, I just got a bit offended with your post, which had little factual basis to it.  I also let a bit of pent up anger come out and did my best to bite my tongue.  Justin knows exactly what I'm talking about.  I'm not going to start accusations that I haven't properly researched recently, as they probably aren't as true today as they were in the past.  You guys are doing fine work, so keep it up.

I want to make it clear that "that was my own personal view of what I read".

I'm a pretty crappy perl writer  but why could you guys not write a converter to YaBB2 without looking at Justin's converter?  It's not the database format I was referring to your team pirating - it was more the idea of taking BOTH converters, switching a few relevant parts around and then releasing them on YaBB.

If that is not what you intended to do then I apologise - but what you wrote made it seem exactly that.

They can use the converters however they please.  I'm not going to say the converters work without flaw because I only tested them on a test forum.  It'd be nice for credit, as I did have to do a lot of research of their database to figure out what went where, but over all they're not required to do it unless they copy code word for word, which I doubt they'll do.

Ryan, I know that was your opinion, and that's what I was upset at.  This is not our intention.  If anyone even uses those converters (more likely the YaBB 2 one than phpBB), the only thing that would come out of it is what Eblah data exists and how, and possibly where it relates to YaBB's data format (which is something we'll have to verify anyhow).  Literally just the data structures - no verbatim code.

If I can give any hinters .... you might like how the converter is just one script essentially taking the data, and the other just interacting with the foreign database.  Of course I didn't write them to be too memory efficient, so no telling how much is used with a huge forum.  What am I doing telling you this though ... lol

We are actually considering database drivers that contain the data schema for each of the "other" systems for ours.  A "converter" script that can read in any database driver you throw at it, based on which forum you say you are converting.  Sounds like the idea you already had.  I haven't looked at your converters yet.

Nothing wrong with us blatantly helping each other out.  I'd rather this than the alternative

Yeah, they'll work better that way.  It makes it easier on the ones working on the actual converters.

Also, I don't mind helping someone out ...... I just don't want stuff said about me that's not true.
