Hi

With the greatest of respect the problem we have in the uk is that a lot of citys and large towns share the same ip address but are on diffrent segments of the towns network therfore if we ban a certain ip address of a member it will also ban lots of other members from the same ip address on the forum , what we really need is a feature to allow us to ban a user name and not ban the ip address of the member. We are thinking along the lines of just putting the members name into a box and then selecting how long that member should be banned for. That way just the user name is banned and can be used by the moderators and admin can always ban that members ip if needed.

Until this issue is resolved, the Senior mods and standard mods cannot ban a user as this could cause the forum to loose a lot of users from banning 1

Hi peeps

Thanks for the input....

As i have said, banning the ip addy over here in the UK can be catostophic to say the least, Therefore would it be possible for you guys to change the script so that the moderators can BAN using Username and not the IP addy?

Bashy

Aren't Class A IPs unique? I wouldn't like to think any of my network's public individual user IPs were sitting anywhere else.

Banning Class B or Class C IPs will ban whole network segments anywhere, not just UK.

Is the real problem having groups of users behind NAT boxes or similar.

(Apologies, but I'm intrigued, and just being nosey since no-one else commented)

Hi

The main problem over here is.....

Users in the same area have unique mac addresses, and people in the same segments have the same (exact) IP address, it is the mac address that makes then unique.....

on top of that we have a lot of users in the UK with Cloned modems thus also giving off the same IP address...

For example: My friend in Wales Lives in cardiff and in his catchment area alone there is about 60 users with the same IP address...

So i am sure you can see the dilema and issues that may arrise from banning an IP address, It would be much safer if our Moderators could ban just a Username..

If they are senior mods and you give them this function they will have the same rights as the administrator. Why not create a new group call Senior Mods and give them admin rights.

Thanks for the info bashy, still not comfy with the duplicate public IPs, but was aware of the MAC address handling side inside the local network. I must go read more

Unless I misunderstand the question regarding the forum, the Username banning is a standard option available for Admins.

From the Administrator Control Panel on the left of the main Admin page:

Select Ban Users Panel from the Member Setup and Controls section.

This opens the Ban Users Panel which offer the option of banning by:

IP Address Username or E-Mail

From here you can also setup various Ban Groups if you have enough offenders, and set bans to be automatically time-limited, or forever.
