Justin,

Just to let you know that whilst your comments may be helpful to a complete novice I find them a little patronising.

We have more than enough space on our server and my partner works for a major developer website dealing with mysql and php every day, he also maintains their servers!

I chose this forum because the front end looked easy but it seems the arse doesnt know what the elbow is doing so we are ditching it and going with a PROPER one that uses a professional database (mysql) rather than a pretend one instead.
One that can handle more than 50 members without spitting out its dummy.

BTW, with every upgrade... its got WORSE!

Oh and FYI, we backup OFF server so that ISNT an issue

A view not shared by the amateur users!

Flatfile db is no more or less 'professional' than MySQL or any other variant.

My, and I'm sure many other, E-Blah forums have more than 50 members, and have never 'spat out their dummies' in almost 2 years.

For your claimed capabilities, your public rant is less than professional (or even adult)l, and probably indicates where the source of the problems reported lie.

If you dislike it so much, just go away quietly without issuing insults like a petulant child.

I am sorry, but I have to second that.  I have had one or two little niggles with EBlah myself but all have been answered and dealt with promptly.  Most problems have been directly caused by my own actions and I have always restored functionality quickly.
I enjoy the quick load times associated with flat text data without having to rely on interoperability with other, third party databases which in my experience can cause bottlenecks.
In my experience eblah is great and afterall, it is still free and is always a work in progress.

Mike.

If you want me to do a fresh install and migrate your users for you, and make sure it is working, I will.  It seems like your frustration is leading to your comment above, but I can tell you with out a doubt, that the problems that you are having have nothing to do with E-Blah.

If you want my help, just PM me your FTP details, and web address.

Thanks,
Craig

LOL of course SQL is far superior to flatfiles. Do you think Microsoft would have spent millions of dollars developing their SQL database if flatfiles are just as good.. I think not.

Why spam this forum if you already have another?  Trust me, out of 3 years (or is it 4 now?!) of running E-Blah, the only problems I've had were 1) user errors, 2) server errors, or very low chances, bugs.  Fortunatly, 90% of the time it's user errors, and 9.9% it's server errors.  That .1% chance it's E-Blah, I research and if it is indeed a bug I've released a patch for it WITHIN TWO HOURS (of being notified).

The issues you described were exactly the same ones we've saw on other servers where one of the following happened:
1. Server ran out of space
2. Server running a back (and ran out of space -- either with their QUOTA or PHYSICAL disk space).
2a. Even if your server that runs the SITE runs the backup on ANOTHER drive, chances are it'll create a TEMP backup on the main server HDD
3. Power outage (very, very unlikely)
4. Networked drives (those are always fun)

I believe that's it ... I think I may be missing a few though.  Hmmm ...

I've saw many people have these problems, and these are ALWAYS what they turn out to be.  Deny them if you will, but facts still remain -- 3+ years of it.

We have over 4,150 members and I've never had a hitch.  I've saw more users than that before, though.

Post Groups;

I'm looking to be able to have a post group (anyone over 25 posts) who then will be able to post on the x message board, or message category. Perhaps even x posts = a category/board becomes viewable to a member.

Maybe this is already possible, but when I put a number in the no posts text box all the extra features below are disabled. Anyone point me in the right direction?

I think I've thought about adding this as a feature, mealybar.

Just a quick one for minx69, and this is not to add to childish ranting. Something many may have come across if they, like me have used other forum software.

My preferance is for the flat db and mysql being better is a load of crap. As many are like me, mysql is not a place for a novice to go if they want to look at any information. Try finding the members name, pass info in there for a start, or back your forum up and restore it. Bet there are not many that come back to a forum without a server error.

The main thing I want to get over here though, and in defence of E-Blah, look at this thread, every day and on more than one occasion, 2 or 3 responces in a day, the amount of help and dedication by the support group and members here is second to none.

If you want to prove that, go to phpbb2 support and post on there, I still have more than 20 posts on that place not answered or answered by a member of staff that seems just intent on showing off his ability and taking 20 lines to say nothing.

If I was still on there, my forum would be off line for weeks on end, I crashed my E-Blah forum more than once as a certain support member will vouch for.

I sat in the same position as you, judging the forum software, but in the end, more than 99% of my problems were self inflicted, like typo's.

My forum has never been off line for more than a day, as support have come good and put it all back up, I never lost a post either. On more than one occasion, a certain member of support was up until the early hours of the morning while I was in bed, and guess what, sign on, there was my forum, good as new.

What more could any person want from a forum, okay, bugs get in, some members now and again sound a little patronising, yup, they sure do, but hey, if you answered the same question 20 times a day and another 30 ask it again, would you not sound this way.

Look at the posts by Justin, Craig, Martin, etc you can call them what you want, all I see is an answer in the same style as all the other answers, they do what they are supposed to, help, follow a thread when there is a problem, guess what, it ends up regular as clock work,  "send me your site details, I will fix it for you"!

hey, again, try that one out on the previous forum support, you will get a PM from some of them offering to fix it for the sum of $50 to $100 an hour, good when you can get it eh, you design in a bug and get paid for fixing it!.

Sincerly, if you move to other forum software, take my advice, check out the support first, you might be a lucky one with an expert in mysql and PHP, but for the majority of the time, the support will still be required and in many cases, you may be even more upset than you are now.

all the best

Kenny
